After a few months hibernation, SHORTWAVE, the all-day showcase of emerging talent in film, music and video art returns to returns to 93 Feet East.
Post screening performances come from KAPUTT, PEEPSHOW, ANARCHISTWOOD and THE SHARMILLS with visuals being supplied by award winning Brazilian video artist MARCELLO BORGES
Kaputt single 'Dishes' (North and South) has been dubbed the coolest fucking thing on the planet right now... It's a safe wager that had Peel been around this cutie may well have been gathering votes at such a pace that the top spot for the Festive 50 would have been a bets off foregone conclusion. Kaputt are a fledging Anglo - German combo put together by ex Go! Team (er) Silke Steidinger and the demonic 'Dishes' is their debut release. Those expecting anything remotely similar in sound to Steidinger's former charges had better quickly think again, this brutish hollowed beauty is a punishing heads down sonic assault that mutates around a circularly grinding kraut groove.
Making their first appearance at Shortwave are PEEPSHOW whose music is simple and groovy...
Because they make it up as they go along, the sound varies depending on when and where they play. Up till now they have mostly played at private parties and outdoor events providing live grooves to keep people on their feet all night. Driving dance beats, dirty dub riffs, or it can go all slinky and funky. Enjoy!
The 10 piece, trans-Atlantic, London based, cabaret punk band Anarchistwood started their journey into the light in the cavernous mind of manic creator Candis Flipped. Texan born Devillia De Dallas, burlesque performer with BurlyQ, requested that Flipped and Funkcutter (pagan wife of Flipped) join her on stage for BurlyQs revue in Spring 2006. A punked - up rendition of "Sympathy for the Devil" took London and the Summer Festivals by storm, complete with burning nipple tassels!
Along the way they have been joined by Mexican percussionist Pedro Ortiz, Cherokee Texan Warrior Sister Double Bubble Trouble, Leon De Lucy, The Wonderful Arthur, VJ Air and Treatment Rooms special acts Carrie Pig Tits and Rainey Lane.
THE SHARMILLS are a 'Bacharach / Motown inspired female fronted London 3 piece, with an
experimental electro-indie edge. Dynamic, diverse and huge sounding with songs that range from strange, dreamlike emotional ballads, to highly charged electric and theatrical angst, all with an underlying Bacharach-style pop sensibility. They make frequent side-steps into classic pop that would do Burt Bacharach proud; a song that hints at the ambition and scope this band possesses, genius stuff"
Previously described as "PJ Harvey seducing Minnie Ripperton on a Polanski film set..."
Joining the dots between audio and visual in the main hall will be resident DJs ROB WRAY and JOHN REYNOLDS.
