Based in East London, yet not restricted by the fashion-led regiment of any Shoreditch scene, BLACK POETS were formed during the summer of 2007 by Gerard LeCain and Billy Randall, and later joined by Stephen J Good and Nenad Kostadinovski. By avoiding the Joy Division influence so common for leather jacket-clad post-punk bands and instead having more in common with acts such as the Chameleons, Echo and the Bunnymen and the Psychedelic Furs, Black Poets have shown that there are still veins of gold to be found in this melancholic mine. In part this is down to breadth of their inspiration, taking in not only the monotone mood of early eighties Manchester and New York but also the soaring and expansive soundscapes of Kansas post-rockers the Appleseed Cast and the emotive melodrama and intricately interwoven melodies of slowcore Swedish band, Logh. The last year has seen Black Poets play dates with the likes of Babyshambles, tapetheradio, Jersey Budd and Pulled Apart by Horses and also head out on a three week national UK headline tour in support of their self-released debut album, Innocents and Thieves. The record has received positive reviews, prompting respected Scottish music magazine the Skinny to describe Black Poets as sounding both beguiling and prophetic.
BLACK SOUL STRANGERS "razor-sharp guitar indents and fractured melodies have recently had industry-types wetting themselves...ambitious Dublin band glow with the light of a burgeoning reputation that precedes them like a will-o'-the-wisp....accomplished arrangement of songs....a band who actually look and sound successful before their time..Strangers, eh? Not for much longer" - NME
'Some bands play. Some bands perform. Apart from and above them all is COLD IN BERLIN, who break the third wall between band and audience, who literally and viscerally engage with a crowd, playing with them as a kitten toys with a mouse before sinking its teeth in for the kill. You want to stand about, nursing your pint, texting a friend? Not while this lot are on, matey.' 'Typically beginning a show within the crowd itself, the dainty demi-dervish that is singer Maya belies her innocent looks with powerfully compelling vocals and a literally in-your-face attitude that fascinates and terrifies in equal measure. Whether on stage or off, Maya is She Who Cannot Be Contained, a feminine fury who commands all before her. There is no hiding place.'
